TEAM COACHING SERIES
Achieving Success in Modern Team-Play
 Many
coaching manuals and training videos have concentrated on the coaching
and acquisition of individual skills. The Team Coaching Series looks
towards the ability of teachers and coaches to observe and
recognise team attributes from selected highlights of international
matches. In an innovative, interactive approach, ‘Team Coaching’
asks the viewer to identify the key assets of the highlighted team.
Once the assets are recognised, the viewer is challenged to produce
a game plan to defeat that style of play!
All five releases in the Team Coaching Series have
been fully endorsed by the FIH Coaching Committee.
The programmes highlight five contrasting styles of
international hockey which have dominated the world game in recent
years: -
1. The attacking approach of the Australian team in “Hockey
Down Under”;
2. The intricate skills of the Argentineans in “Hockey Latino”;
3. The more progressive tactical play in “Hockey Goes Dutch”
Including Taeke Taekema’s full demonstration of the drag flick
at penalty corners
4. The passion and skills of India and Pakistan in “Hockey
Zindabad”
5. The emerging talents of the Chinese and Korean teams in “Hockey
Oriental”
 Throughout
the Team Coaching series, we challenge the viewer to identify common
threads, strengths and weaknesses of the featured team styles with
the aim of expanding the coaches’ knowledge and their teams’
execution of the game.
The commentary team of international personnel, headed
by Olympic coach Gavin Featherstone, examines the style and attributes
of play,which could be adapted to a local club or school. The second
half of the DVD is the Coach’s response to recognition of the
key points by a full presentation of the game plan, using computer
graphics and multi-camera ‘Hock-eye’ technology.
‘Hock-eye’ presents the producers’ recommendations
to score and defend against the set piece Penalty Corners of the analysed
team – it truly is a first for Hockey to use such advanced technical
expertise. The producers, with coaches and players from around the
globe, use freeze-frame, slow motion and directional graphics to help
present game planning subsequent to informed analysis. The Hockey
is entertaining, the presentation is varied, but beyond all the fun
and technical wizardry there is a real opportunity for teachers and
coaches to improve their analytical and creative skills to enhance
their own team’s performance.
 England
Hockey’s Coaching Development Unit has prioritised the importance
of coaching in the game. The series is aimed at intermediate levels,
for the coach who is beyond the skills instruction stage and responsible
for team groups. It is a very useful training tool for encouraging
in-service development. A Head Coach can use the material to stimulate
their assistants’ abilities to read the play and put his/her
ideas into practice.
